CHILD PROTECTION AND STUDENT WELFARE

Offences against children is a global problem with grave life-long outcomes. It spans geographies, caste, religion, nationalities, race and even the ties of family. Though there is a firm increase in instances of offences against children but there is universal reluctance to initiate dialogue about it. There is a need of increased awareness among the people at large and foster open discussion.

India is home to 19% of the world’s children. It has the world’s largest number of youngsters. More than one third of the country’s population around 440 million is below 18 years. Children require the guardianship and care of adults, are among the most vulnerable and innocent victims of crimes. Offences against children in India have increased by more than 500% over the last 10 years. It includes physical and emotional abuse; neglect; bullying and exploitation which has various adverse effects on the psychological, physical, behavioral, and interpersonal well-being of the victim.

India as a country, do not have proper prevention mechanisms in place to address the issue of child protection, nor are we ardent on building more empathetic understanding and intervention plans adequately backed up by sustained investment on child security. Child protection in our country cannot be ensured with just having legislations and numerous guidelines. We as a country need to pledge in nurturing a culture of zero tolerance for violence against children. We should be watchful and aware of the fact that children are at threat with gaps in infrastructure, processes and systems as well as people. It is non-negotiable for us to equip ourselves in recognizing these risks and put robust systems and processes to assess and eliminate the same. We motivate an effective education system and encourage each one of you to do your part in preventing offences against children in all forms, and giving every child, irrespective of societal background, caste, creed and religion – a future.

We draw people from all walks of life to ensure a safe environment for children. Children are given training in different aspects, where they are taught about the good touch and the bad touch and various other relevant aspects. To increase the knowledge, we provide child protection training, resources, and support to school and university leaders to consider the role they all have in keeping students safe.
